In case you have only a couple campers and are searching for some easy camp cooking, try the easy and fast technique of tin can cooking. All you will need is a clean tin can – a 1 gallon size can works well. Your source of warmth may be small campfire, or when wood burning is prohibited, a little buddy burner will work well, which may be found at sporting good stores or online. Put your meal in the tin can and simply heat the contents of your own can over a flame. You will have a hot meal ready in seconds. This technique works great for sauces, beans and tuna fish.

A more time-consuming camp cooking technique which also produces tasty food is pit cooking. Pit cooking is great for items which could be wrapped in aluminum foil to be cooked. It is also a great camp cooking system if you are using a dutch oven or cast iron cookware. Pit cooking calms your food by heating rocks and coals which are buried in the floor. As the stones cool away, their emitted heat cooks the meals. To pit cook, first dig a hole that’s about three times larger than your own cookware. Line the pit with rocks and create a fire in the middle. Once the fire has burned rapidly for approximately one hourpush the warm coals and rocks into the middle. Twist your wrapped meals or covered skillets on top of the rocks and coals and put on top. Following a number of hours, you’ll have some delicious camp food to relish.

Instructions to make Baked Macaroni & Cheese (Surf & Turf):
  1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Prep ingredients and canned goods. Reserve clam juice. Start boiling water for pasta. Quarter tomatoes, drain liquid. Don’t feel too bad about losing the liquid. The tomatoes still have a lot of juice.
  2. Melt a stick of butter, add flour and continue to stir until you achieve a color as seen below. Add milk slowly while continuing to stir. Bring to a simmer and allow to thicken. Add a handful of cheese and combine.
  3. When roux has thickened, add it to a casserole dish of hopefully cooked al dente pasta.
  4. Add your prepped ingredients. Season. Mix throughly. Top with remaining cheese. Place in oven for 35-40 minutes.
  5. Add a tablespoon of butter into a pan with about 10 minutes to go on the timer. Melt butter and toast some bread crumbs. Mine were unseasoned… I seasoned them myself. In honesty, this step is totally optional.
  6. I took a video but I can’t post it. I guess you can only upload it live. But anyway, remove from oven, top with bread crumbs, oregano and parsley flakes. Allow to cool for about 15 minutes before serving.
  7. Grate some Parmesan on top to seal the deal.
